Wool base layer for training on cold days

It’s easy for your motivation to drop in line with the temperature, but it doesn't have to be that way. There are clever ways to use wool baselayers, which provide warmth and comfort on cold days.

Wool baselayers and training

Wool keeps you warm even when the weather changes and turns cold. It’s all about finding the right clothes for the activity. For high-intensity activities, a blend of wool and synthetics is a good option as it offers both temperature regulation and moisture-wicking, which means the clothing doesn't feel wet or clammy on the body.

For activities with lower intensity, a thicker wool baselayer is more suitable as this keeps you warm during inactive periods. It’s important to remember that you shouldn't wear too many clothes, as you can easily become too hot and overheated. Too much clothing can also restrict movement.

Wool baselayers and sportswear are now available in merino wool, which is soft and comfortable on the skin. Merino wool is silky soft on the skin and has all the features of the more robust Norwegian wool. Even in varying weather, wool will keep warm and adjust to your body temperature, so you don't feel too hot or cold.

Don't worry if you don't have a wool bra lying around. A good trick is to wear a sports bra over your wool baselayer, so you still get all the benefits of wool, along with proper support for your chest.

The right clothes are important

Too few clothes, too many clothes – it’s easy to lose track. Windblock products are ideal for training on colder days for varied activities such as running, hiking or skiing.

We have collections that can be worn alone, such as for high-intensity training and changing weather conditions, and which can be combined with a middle layer for lower intensity activities. One combination could be a wool shirt with a windblock jacket on top. Layering on cold days gives you the best thermal comfort, moisture wicking and temperature regulation for an optimal workout.

Training windblock jacket

This jacket is a technical running jacket in stretch merino wool and mesh panels. A soft and comfortable running jacket that can be used for longer periods of time without smelling bad.

The jacket has stretch in the wind panels at the front and mesh panels at the side and back, which provide excellent breathability and warmth. It also has reflective details for extra safety in the dark.

Gira Windblock tights

Gira is a combination of pants and tights with elastic wind panels at the front. The tights are made from merino wool with good thermo-regulation properties, and they retain heat even during inactive periods in cold environments. With reflective details for better visibility and a pocket bag at the back for accessories.

Accessories

To get the most out of your workout, you also need a pair of decent shoes, which must be suitable for varying conditions such as sleet and snow. Equally important are good socks that keep your feet warm whatever the weather or temperature. Wool socks work in the same way as wool clothing and will keep you warm even if you get wet. If you wear wool socks designed for your specific activity, you will improve your training experience.

There are plenty of wool accessories that are warm to wear and easy to carry. You can never go wrong with a headband, hat or mittens, especially on windy and cold days when dressing properly is extra important.
