THE HISTORY

OF THE MARIUS PATTERN

The pattern MARIUS® is the most well-known and commonly used hand-knitting pattern in Norway, with over 7 million patterns sold. The pattern is considered a Norwegian icon, capturing the love for nature and outdoor life, and for most people synonymous with the “Norwegian sweater”.

The designer Unn Søiland sold her hand-knitting pattern to the wool factory
Sandnes Uldvarefabrik i 1953, but kept the production rights for the pattern, now administrated by Marius of Norway AS.

Unn Søiland received the King’s Medal of Merit in gold for her lifelong pioneering work to develop Norwegian knitting traditions and design for hand-knitting and wool, and to make Norwegian wool fabrics popular internationally.
